Outreach, POLICY & EDUCATION

Translating groundbreaking research programs and results into practical applications is a main area of emphasis for NAU. Four programs in particular are highly influential in educating the public, educators, tribal professionals, and policy-makers about water issues, and helping to bring together coalitions of stakeholders for informed decision-making about the many critical water issues facing our state.

Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals (ITEP)

ITEP conducts a comprehensive environmental training and education program in water resources for tribal environmental professionals across the nation. The program includes a center that facilitates and supports tribal water resource management and protection through training, education, and professional development.

WREP and its partners received an $850,000 grant from Science Foundation Arizona to develop the Arizona Rivers information clearinghouse. Learn more.

The Watershed Research & Education Program (WREP), begun in 2000, is a partnership between the Salt River Project (SRP), the USDA Forest Service, the Central Arizona Project, the US Bureau of Reclamation, Yavapai County, and other agencies and groups. Its mission is to promote and support water resources research, education, and outreach in north-central Arizona watersheds. Field schools are offered each year, with alternating years for K-12 educators (watershed science) and “decision-makers” (water policy, water law, and science). Learn more.

Arizona Water Institute (AWI)

An exciting new partnership between Arizona State University, NAU, and the University of Arizona will position the state as a world leader in water resources management and technology. AWI is primarily interesting in sustaining Arizona's water supply, which is crucial to the state's economy, the health and well-being of its residents, and its natural environment.

The Arizona Water Institute has overseen the creation of a new, web-based water information system. The Arizona Hydrologic Information System, provides real-time information to researchers, policy makers, and land managers. Check out this Inside NAU article on funding provided by AWI for water research at Arizona's state universities.

Arizona Heritage Waters
