Restoration and Monitoring of Springs, Wetlands, and Riparian Areas
NAU has been at the forefront in watershed restoration and management.- The Arizona Rivers Project trains teachers, students, and citizen volunteers so that they can provide needed support for land managers across the state.
- Researchers partnered with private industry (APS), state and federal agencies, tribal governments, and conservation groups in establishing guidelines and support for decommissioning the Fossil Creek dam while protecting and enhancing native fish populations, the riparian ecosystem, and the travertine geology of the creek. This project was documented in the video: "A River Reborn: The Restoration of Fossil Creek".

- Mapping and documenting the importance of springs, seeps, and wetlands as sacred sites, both on and off indigenous lands, has been an important aspect of Gary Nabhan’s work.
- The Tecle Lab of Hydrology focuses on holistic watershed management. This includes the study of the interaction of forest users, forest restoration treatments, vegetation management, and fire on surface hydrology.
