Water Quality, Wastewater Treatment and Detection of Contaminants
Monitoring of endocrine disrupting compounds in effluent from the Rio de Flag wastewater treatment plant has led to strong partnerships between researchers at NAU, USGS hydrologists, the City of Flagstaff, Coconino County, and industry. Ground-breaking new assays and tests for detecting these compounds in the field have also been developed by Timothy Vail at NAU. Policy changes, improved treatment techniques at the Rio de Flag plant, and improved detection of contaminants in the water have led to > 99% removal of certain endocrine disrupting compounds, providing a model for similar efforts at treatment plants across the state. Internationally, faculty and student involvement in Engineers Without Borders has led to improved water supply and wastewater treatment in northern Ghana.
