Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals
Building Clean Nations
The Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals (ITEP) won’t wash its hands of dirty air or dirty water. In fact, the institute has made a clean environment its passion. Founded in 1992 in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the institute is under the umbrella of NAU’s Center for Sustainable Environments. The institute helps train air-quality professionals associated with Indian nations across the United States. It is the only environmental training institution in the country specifically designed to address the air-management needs of Indian tribes. In addition, it has recently launched training programs dealing with other environmental issues.
One of its prominent programs, the American Indian Air Quality Training Program, now conducts fourteen separate air-quality training workshops across the nation, with more in development. The institute also is deeply involved in education. Its Environmental Education Outreach Program encourages Native American students to consider environmental careers through its varied, environmentally focused educational activities.
Air quality is of paramount interest to NAU’s Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals. ITEP offers training and education programs so Indian nations can better manage air quality and other environmental resources on tribal lands.
