Undergrads discover a graduate-level experience

Robert Buscaglia’s accomplishments read like those of an ambitious graduate student: Co-author of multiple manuscripts, involved with a team of scholars in groundbreaking cancer research, recipient of numerous academic awards, including being one of only 60 students nationwide named to USA Today’s All-USA College Academit Team. The difference is that Buscaglia, 21, is still an undergraduate.

“Robert has contributed to enough research and articles to be at the Master’s level,” says Edwin Lewis, Buscaglia’s mentor and chemistry professor.

“I’m right where I want to be,” Buscaglia says. “But it’s definitely not where I expected I would be. If you’re interested in research, the best opportunities for undergraduates are here at NAU. You really feel like part of a community when your professors make the time for you. That’s the quality of NAU that I think makes it Number 1 in Arizona. Being here is why I’ve been able to accomplish so much.”
