The NAU IRB has replaced the NCI tutorial with the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI). Any NAU faculty, staff or student planning on conducting research or working on a research project as key personnel are required to successfully complete this tutorial. There are 11 modules for Social/Behavioral research, 12 for Biomedical and 5 General Interests.
The NAU IRB CURRENTLY REQUIRES COMPLETION OF SIX MODULES; Belmont Report, CITI Course Introduction, Northern Arizona University, History and Ethical Principles, Basic Institutional Review Board, and Informed Consent.
ADDITIONALLY, completion is required of modules directly related to the proposed research; Research with Protected Populations – Vulnerable Subjects: An Overview, Vulnerable Subjects – Research with Prisoners, Vulnerable Subjects – Research Involving Minors, International Research, Group Harms: Research with Culturally or Medically Vulnerable Groups, and Workers as Research Subjects.
A short quiz follows each module. The NAU IRB requires a minimum passing score of 85% for each module. If a score falls below 85% it is possible to repeat the module. It is also possible to complete some modules, logout, and login later to complete the other modules. The NAU IRB requires a refresher course every two years.
To register clink on the link above and start as New User by clicking on Register Here, choose a User Name and Password, and Continue. Use your NAU email account unless you do not have a NAU email account then enter the email account that you will use on the Initial Application for Research. On the profile page for “Employee Number”, students should enter their student ID number, faculty and staff will enter their staff ID number, and staff who also have student status should enter their staff ID number. This field is not required on the form, but it is important to fill out. The NAU IRB will use the ID number to keep track of completed modules. For assistance send an email to IRB@nau.edu with CITI in the subject field.
